SETTING BOUNDARIES

Setting boundaries is truly one of the most important life skills one can learn for it is a key for maintaining balance and managing the stress of our lives in a healthy and constructive way.  So often we don't set the boundaries that we need to set because we are afraid to "hurt someone's feelings" or of making them angry.  We might also feel guilty when we say No when asked to serve on a committee or to do something that we truly don't feel up to doing.  This creates dishonest relationships as we are not truly teaching people who we are and what we want and need. If we don't set boundaries when we know we need to, it can create feelings of being disrespected or of being taken advantage of.  A stress free and healthy life requires that we know our limits, that we take responsibility for our own health and well being and that we do what we know we need to do to be at our best. We must love ourselves enough to say NO when to say YES would throw us out of balance or add more stress to our lives. It is SMART to take loving care of your mind, body and spirit and only YOU know what actions you need to take to protect and to nourish yourself.
Boundaries are learned. If in your family of origin it was modeled to get into everyone's stuff, read your mail, walk in to rooms without knocking, invading your space without sensitivity to your feelings or needs then you might be uncomfortable in setting boundaries. If you grew up in a household where privacy was valued and taught, then you most likely honor other people's boundaries.
In general physical and emotional boundaries keep us safe, and certainly must be practiced if we are to manage our stress, our time, and our busy lives. All of us can learn to set and to accept healthy boundaries, it is just a matter of understanding their value and purpose.
I will be focusing on the skill of boundary setting at my upcoming brunch and wisdom event on March 30th and hope you and your friends will make reservations and join me.
