Take Care of the Whole not just a Part

As a wellness mental health professional for 30 years, one of the most challenging things for me to do is to help people understand what holistic and wellness really means. It is taking care of the Whole Person, not just a part of that person. There are 4 dimensions, that complete us: Our physical self, our intellectual self, our emotional self and our spiritual self. It is important for us to understand that what affects one part of us affects the other parts. What affects your mind for instance affects your body. What affects you emotionally can affect your body and your mind, and so on.
In my workshops and life coaching work I assist clients in looking at the total picture and the first step is to understand what these dimensions really are:
The Physical Dimension has to do with the body, its functions, and the activities that support it.
At the core is how it is maintained through what we eat and how we exercise it. Preventive activities like physicals, dental maintenance, voiding overindulgence, resting our body, being in our body and listening to it, taking care of our physical safety, etc. are all aspects of physical wellness.
The Emotional Dimension is concerned with feelings. It is our inner world. Awareness of one's feelings and the ability to express and communicate them. Trusting our instincts when we make choices. Our feelings guide us and if not acknowledged can get us into physical, relationship, and other problems.
The Intellectual Dimension has to do with internal behaviors that are not affective in nature. It includes thoughts and attitudes. It includes issues of self concept, creativity, and learning. Pursuing interests, reading, keeping abreast of new ideas that enrich us. Keeping our minds alive.
The Spiritual Dimension refers to what individuals hold sacred in their lives. It is not to be confused with religion although religion could a part of it.  It is about what is important to us at our core. It is centered on issues of faith, values, and ethics. In this sphere people come to terms with their beliefs and their relationship with a higher power. It is having a sense of purpose and having/showing compassion for others and our self.

It concerns me that the media focuses only on diet and exercise. Certainly these are important. But how are we handling our stress, our feelings? What causes us to overindulge or not take good care of our mind and our bodies?  Toward this end I offer wellness opportunities to help balance our whole self. I hope you will sign up for one of the opportunities for inner growth for yourself and your the wellness of your relationships. Stay Well.......Namaste, Molly
