The Importance of Emotional Safety

Emotional safety is crucial for open and honest communication so let's make it safer for our children, our employees, our spouses, our friends and families to share their feelings and their dreams and hopes. How do we do this? By Validating the feelings of others.
It is not helpful to try and talk people out of their feelings or to rescue them from their feelings. Feelings are a natural and normal part of being a productive and mentally healthy human being. When we tell our children to not cry or not to be angry we are teaching them to stuff their feelings and to not be honest and authentic. When we ask our significant other to be honest with us and then respond with dish throwing rage, threats, or shaming responses when they share their true feelings, we are shutting down open and honest communication by teaching the other that is not safe to share their feelings with us after all. When we discount our employee's feelings or opinions by putting them down or shutting them off or when we punish them for their honest expression we are creating an emotionally unsafe atmosphere and teaching "it is not safe to be honest and authentic here". Allowing others to be who they are and to encourage honest and productive sharing of feelings, needs, wants and opinions creates honest, healthy and productive environments, relationships and organizations.
Teaching emotional intelligence to my corporate and individual clients is one of  the most important life skills I can teach for in order to be whole and complete and a truly mentally and physically healthy person, we must understand the role our emotional aspect plays. When neglected it leads to sickness, depression, anxiety, irrational thinking, rebellious or inappropriate behaviors, and misunderstandings.
